25th Annual Minnesota Future City Competition

The 25th Annual Minnesota Future City Competition

The 25th Annual Minnesota Future City Competition took place on January 18, 2025. The Minnesota IT Center of Excellence partnered with SparkPath to host this event at Metropolitan State University.

Thirty teams of middle school students started working on their future city designs in September. Prior to the in-person competition, teams submitted a four-part project plan, a 1500-word research essay, and built a tabletop city model. On January 18th, students displayed their models at Metro State, gave presentations about their cities, and fielded questions from judges. The theme of this year’s competition was “Above the Current” – students designed cities that could float on water.

These are the teams who placed in the top five:

  • First place – Justice Page Middle School (Minneapolis Public Schools), team Nieuwmaris

  • Second place – Valley Middle of STEM (Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan Schools), team Project: Kelluva

  • Third place – Girl Scout Troop #27432, team Mocamapolis

  • Honorable Mention – Mounds Park Academy, team AuroraVann

  • Honorable Mention – Scott Highlands Middle School (Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan Schools), team Veneziano Galleggiante

The FCC MN website is updated with our Special Award winners and impact report.

Our first-place team from Justice Page Middle School will compete in the National Future City Competition on February 15-18, 2025, in Washington, DC.
